The Great Outdoors

Today the weather was perfect so we chose to spend the day enjoying the great outdoors.  We left the campground around 10:30 and drove a scenic loop that took us by the Mt. Washington Cog Railway, some nice waterfalls, and the White Mountains Visitor Center.  It was a wonderful day and we all enjoyed the change of pace.

We went to the Cog Railway to look around and go to the museum.  The train was at the top of the mountain so we didn't get to see it, but the museum gave us a lot of information.  We also got to see one of the retired cog trains.  It was a clear day and we could see the observation station at the top of the mountain.  We could also see the train track going up the ridge line.

We stopped at this waterfall and explored for a little while.  I could have spent hours there taking pictures and listening to the water.

Another spectacular flower that grows wild in this area.

Jeremiah making friends with the bear at the Visitor's Center.

We passed this trading post on our drive and saw this bear outside in his enclosure.  We got out of the car and watched him for a little while.  He was so cute sitting in his chair and playing with his ball.

......and surprise, surprise!  Further down the road, I spotted a bear on one of the ski slopes in the distance.  We pulled off the road and watched.  Then we spotted another bear further up the slope.  We tried to find a road that would get us closer but there wasn't one.  You probably can't see it in the picture below, but just look for the little black dot.  I promise it's a bear....we confirmed it with binoculars.

We bought sandwiches at Subway for a dinner picnic and took them to a secluded stream for some fun time in the water.  The kids had a blast even though the water was freezing!  We tried to stay in the sunshine as much as we could, but it was still a little cool.  We were even crazy enough to wade up the river quite a ways until our toes were completely numb.
