Yesterday morning we got up early to finish the drive to Twin Mountain, New Hampshire. We took the scenic route....on Route 2....to MEXICO! Yes, we really went to Mexico (Mexico, Maine that is). It struck us a little funny that we had just left Canada and suddenly we were in Mexico. There wasn't too much to the town, just a few stores and a couple factories. We ordered some pizza from a Pizza Hut in the town and had a picnic in the RV.
The drive to New Hampshire was very scenic. The road winds through the base of the mountains alongside rocky streams. You could take a thousand pictures and still not capture the vast beauty of this area. Just before crossing out of Maine, we stopped in a little town called Newry to visit a covered bridge known as "The Artist's Bridge". It is the most photographed bridge in the state of Maine.
Before we drove down the road to the bridge, we tried to look at the route on GPS and Google maps to make sure it was accessible with the RV. It looked as if the road was a little narrow but there were two parking areas on either side of the bridge that would allow us to turn the RV around. We made the decision to not unhook the Jeep and just take our chances. Well.....we arrived at the bridge....and both parking areas were full. We couldn't believe it. We pulled off the side of the road beside a field and walked over to the bridge. The reason there were so many vehicles was because the company Pottery Barn was doing a photo shoot there. They were decorating for a photo shoot for their holiday catalog that will come out this fall. I was a little disappointed at first because I couldn't get some of the shots I wanted, but it was neat to see something like that. We will have to get the catalog when it comes out so we can see the shots they took.
We walked down to the water and the kids played with the stones for a little while. It was such a pleasant day and the water was pretty warm. We all wished we could have stayed there longer, but we knew we needed to get back on the road. So....back to the RV we went. Since the turn around areas were full, Michael had decided he could drive into the field a little ways and then swing the RV around to the road. Yep, it sounded like a good plan.....only it didn't work. He got the RV turned around.....right across the road....blocking any traffic. The Jeep was still hooked up so he couldn't back up and he couldn't go forward because there was a tree in the way. The only choice we had was to unhook the Jeep so he could move the RV. It was quite a challenge because the Jeep was turned at a sharp angle behind the RV. We finally got it unhooked and Michael maneuvered the RV out of the middle of the road. Thankfully only one vehicle came down the road while this was happening and they were very patient with us. Let's just say we learned a lesson there. If in doubt....don't take the RV down the road....just unhook the Jeep and go!
We finally crossed the border into New Hampshire and made it to our campground around 4:30. It's very beautiful here. The mountains are all around us. We're deep into bear and moose country. We were given warnings about what to do if we were to spot a bear. We were also told to not leave any food or trash outside so we wouldn't attract them.
We enjoyed watching the hummingbirds on the campground. There were a handful of them that kept coming to these two feeders.
A few pictures of some the flowers on the property. The first flower is called a lupine and it grows wild in many areas around here. We bought a packet of lupine seeds to try at home.
The kids wrapped up the day with a swim in the heated pool here. It was good for them to have an opportunity to play for a while. They were all tired of sitting so long in the RV.
