We are now in beautiful Bar Harbor, Maine. Yesterday, we got up early and drove north on I-95 to Freeport, ME to visit the L.L.Bean flagship store. We had a good time walking around the huge store, shopping in the the outlet stores nearby, and eating lunch at Johnny Rockets.
This is a fish tank inside the L.L. Bean store.
Around 2:30 we got back on the road to Bar Harbor. We took the scenic route, US-1, and really enjoyed the ride. We arrived at the campsite around 6:30 and set up quickly so we could go out for a quick dinner. On the way to the campground, we spotted a super Wal-mart (the first one we had seen since we left Gastonia) and a Goodwill. Of course we had to go shopping! I think we were all going through Wal-mart withdrawals. Ha, ha, ha....
A one lane suspension bridge we had to cross to get to the island.
Look how high up it is! It's even worse when you're crossing it in an RV!
The view from our campsite.....so peaceful!
This morning we took our time getting ready and then went for a walk on the beach here in the campground. We saw lots and lots of small spiral shells several other varieties. The tide was out and we were able to walk out on some rocky areas covered by seaweed. We all enjoyed looking for treasures on the beach. Later in the afternoon, we came back to the campground and noticed the tide was in and all of the areas we had walked on were now under water.
At low tide...
We went to a "lobster pound" just down the street for lunch. This is the typical kind of place you will find here and in the Cape Cod area. They sell fresh caught lobsters by the pound then boil them up and serve them with an ear of corn, slaw, and a roll. We decided that we couldn't leave without trying it at least once. It was quite an experience for all of us. Michaela and I loved the lobster, but the boys were not as thrilled with it.
The comedian....he sure made a mess of that lobster!
After lunch, we drove into the little village of Bar Harbor to look around and get more information about the area. This is a really quaint beach town with beautiful views of the mountains in the near distance. It's views are really breathtaking!
When we left the village, we drove through the outer edge of Acadia National Park and saw these deer.
Tonight, we built a fire and grilled bratwurst for dinner. It was so good but it was a little too cold to be eating outside. The temperature was around 50 and the wind coming off the water was very chilly. The kids enjoyed it anyway.
