Cape Cod National Seashore

We said goodbye to New York City yesterday and drove about 7 hours north to Cape Cod Massachusetts.  It was quite a journey considering the GPS routed us to I-95 right through Manhattan, Harlem and the Bronx area.  We all felt like we needed nerve pills by the time we got out of NY.  Not only were the roads in terrible repair and extremely crowded, we had to go through a toll booth before crossing the George Washington Bridge and it cost us $60!!!  What a shock.

We are staying at a very nice campground called Atlantic Oaks in Eastham, MA.  It is about a 20 minute drive from the northern tip of the cape and the quaint beach town of Provincetown.  Today we started out with a tour of the Cape Cod potato chip factory in Hyannis and later found the lighthouse that is featured on the bag.  The lighthouse is located on Nauset beach which is only a couple of miles from the RV park.  The tour was short, but interesting.  We learned that Cape Cod Potato Chips gets potatoes from various locations along the eastern coast in order to always have potatoes that are at their freshest.  Guess where some of the potatoes come from......North Carolina.  During the months of June and July, the factory uses NC potatoes.  Other times they come from places like New Brunswick and Maine.

The beaches are beautiful here and we spent a couple hours on one of them collecting shells and flying the kite.  There was a large group of seals resting on a sandbar not far off of shore.  We've been told that there are other beaches where we can see even more seals and we hope to be able to visit them before we leave the area on Monday.
